CEDAR CANVAS CANOES / BICYCLE REPAIR & MAINTENANCE in HARMONY, NS

Students Learn the Cedar Canvas Tradition

Lawrencetown Educational Centre (L.E.C) continues to take their motto ‘challenge for growth’ sincerely as they embark on learning one of Canada's oldest known heritage crafts.  The cedar canvas canoe has a long and rich history having evolved directly from the birch bark canoe construction in the early 1900’s.  With canvas available Europeans began to construct a new canoe which continued to open up trade and travel routes throughout Canadian waterways.  L.E.C is an experiential school where the learning and building process is made even more special as they now create something that will continue to bring life lessons to students on many future canoe trips into the backcountry.  With a couple weeks completed the cedar canvas canoe is now coming to life in the classroom (Check out photos under L.E.C Builds).  Coincidentally this canoe is being built in the same region as past and present master canoe builders; Tim Stewart (1900-1950’s), Harold Gates (1959-1986), Kip McCurdy (1986-present) who have finely crafted canoes in NS for over one hundred years... and so the tradition continues.
