There is something special about starting a new canoe build, especially when having an active participant in the canoe shop who is keen to create memories from the build to the paddle!
First step: Recruit helpers...
Next, prepare the stem band.
First boiled over a fire, then placed onto form & carefully bent into shape...
All hands on deck making sure the very first piece of the canoe
is shaped with care & the help of family!
Stem band was a success!
With the stem bands attached to the bow & stern,
and the cedar wood milled, Marc is ready to start building.
Steam bending on the first rib of the canoe.
A conscientious supervisor...
Completing the ribs.
Sanding & preparing the canoe for planking.
Attaching the center plank.
Hand tools used for planking.
Making quick progress!
Closing in the ends.
Attaching the decks.
The final planks being put in place!
Starting to cane the canoe seats.
Canoe being sanded & ready for interior varnish.
The 'new build' surrounded by 'old canoes' in for restoration.
Getting the first coat of wood sealer & varnish.
Great Job!
